JOB DESCRIPTION
The Braillist performs Braille transcript of printed materials and oral instructions including transcript print
materials into Braille code forms using a Braille writer and/or a computer. He/she is responsible to the
Principal Rehabilitation Centre for the Visually Impaired through the Senior Teacher for the Visually
Impaired. He/she may participate in seminars and/or workshops with local and international organizations and ministries, related to his/her job.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
In accordance with established Agency policy and procedures, the ideal candidate
Performs a variety of Braille transcript of printed materials and oral instructions including transcript print
materials into Braille code forms using a Braille writer and/or a computer;
Proofreads, verifies accuracy of transcript materials and prepares Braille copies of tests, study materials,
maps, textbooks, charts, large print materials, tactile illustrations and other related media aids using
specialized computers and software, equipment, tools, techniques and other standards;
Types instructional materials, lessons, assignments and worksheets in large print for visually impaired students;
Prepares audio material for student use and prepares students interline brailed material for teachers to correct;
Operates appropriate copy machines to enlarge materials; creates Braille masters for thermoform
machines and provides individual instruction and tutoring to students;
Orders, receives, catalogues and distributes books and instructional materials utilized in the visually impaired programme;
Stores and maintains the library of specialized materials including inventories of books, supplies and other
instructional materials;
Maintains records and files related to students data and prepares various reports related to the visually
impaired programme;
Assists and trains RCVI staff in preparing the materials required in Braille and works closely with them to
ensure accuracy of individual students;

Serves students in the visually impaired programme as necessary
PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES
Diploma in Special Education/Braille/Visual disability or other related specialization.
A certificate in Braille Literacy Code course and/or Braille Transcript course from an accredited college or university.
Two years experience in working with children in an educational settings, preferably in the usage of Braille techniques and equipments environment.
Good standard in English and Arabic Languages.
Ability to communicate effectively in oral and/or written forms, understands and follows oral and written directions;
Ability to demonstrate an understanding attitude regarding the instructional needs of visually impaired students, with cultural awareness and sensitivity to work cooperatively with students and RCVI staff;
Ability to operate software applications for using standard computer applications.
CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
Basic Salary: Monthly basic salary $650.20; plus monthly dependency allowance up to $123.25
Contract Duration: Three years including 1 year probation period.
Pension: Provident Fund contribution
Other conditions of service and benefits may apply.
EQUIVALENCY
Candidates with an equivalent combination of relevant academic qualifications, professional training and progressive work experience may also be considered.

Where there are two or more equally qualified candidates, selection preference will normally be given to

candidate with a temporary-indefinite or fixed-term appointment selected for this post will retain his/her
current contractual status and entitlements in accordance with current letter of appointment and applicable
Area Staff Rules. With their prior agreement, candidates who are approved as suitable for appointment but
are not the selected candidate for this vacancy, will be placed on the Agencys roster of pre-approved
candidates for a period of up to one year, and may be considered for future vacancies in the same position
